Luxembourg's most important shanting yard is getting fit for the future challenges of national and international rail freight transport
equipment and to optimise the alignment in order to ensure sustainable and efficient operations. The focus was on the creation of an APS dossier.
The Bettembourg shanting yard, located just under 10 kilometres south of Luxembourg, is the most important and, with an extension of around 3.5 kilometres, the largest freight transport hub in the Principality. In the period between 2025 and 2032, operations are to be optimised for the future requirements of rail freight transport in terms of efficiency and cost-effectiveness by fundamentally modernising and converting the existing track systems, interlocking technology and shunting equipment. In addition to a fundamental reorganisation of the train formation groups, it is planned to install a new marshalling yard with a marshalling hump and modern shunting equipment as well as the associated process control technology. The project also includes the construction of a new electronic interlocking system (EASTW). The preliminary study APS, taking into account all relevant trades, forms the essential foundation for the subsequent detailed design planning APD (avant-projet définitive) and the further implementation process.
NEXTRAIL GmbH and quattron GmbH coordinated the necessary preparatory work for the construction and equipment trades. As part of the APS dossier, an inventory of the current state and a description of the target state, including the construction phase planning, were drawn up.
Key areas of service
-
Modernisation and conversion of the entire marshalling yard
-
Reorganisation of train formation groups 1 and 2
-
Dismantling of the previous marshalling hump and the old track brakes
-
Construction of a new marshalling yard with modern facilities and process control technology
-
Construction of a new electronic interlocking system (EASTW)
-
Construction of new east and centre operational bypass tracks, taking into account the overpass structure in the direction of Düdelingen
-
Adaptation of the interfaces to neighbouring areas (incl. terminal connection and lines with points connections and ESTW)
-
Determination of necessary buildings
-
Double-track travelling options to and from Esch/Alzette
Special features
Implementation of the preliminary study APS (Avant-projet sommaire) for the modernisation of the Bettembourg marshalling yard. The aim of the project was to renew the interlocking and shunting Due to the numerous construction and shunting technology trades involved and the associated high complexity of the project, structured project coordination and management is essential, even in the early planning phases. NEXTRAIL provided decisive support for the CFL experts thanks to its high level of technical expertise and close links to leading international companies in the field of shunting technology.
