A successful technology strategy needs an economic and technical vision. NEXTRAIL compares the required operational scenarios and strategic objectives with the requirements profile for the signalling systems and helps to create a system master plan or use case to describe the functional requirements for the operational execution of railway operations and the systems required for this purpose.
As part of the feasibility study, NEXTRAIL analyses system construction plans and use cases with regard to their feasibility. Technologies are examined and evaluated for their suitability to the framework conditions. Risk factors are identified and the chances of success are estimated. A detailed examination spanning all technical areas is then carried out to determine whether the envisaged solution approach can be used to achieve the project objectives under the specified framework conditions. Only in exceptional cases, such as new lines, can a target be directly implemented in railway infrastructure. As a rule, the gradual migration of control-command, signalling and rolling stock systems – of which some are decades old – is a prerequisite for achieving the desired target. No two existing systems are identical in detail. Based on many years of expertise in the migration of system architectures in the rail sector, NEXTRAIL can model processes and the development of associated procedural changes and implement transformation processes on the rails and in the rolling stocks in phases, both temporally and geographically.
