LST-Studie zur Eingliederung der Panoramabahn in Stuttgart 21

Study on the integration of the Signalling systems of the Panoramabahn into Stuttgart 21

Ministry of Transport Baden-Württemberg

Stuttgart, December 2022 to ongoing
DSTW

Solution concept for signalling of the highest complexity. Integrated into the technical and operational environment of DKS and the local Stuttgart regional transport services.

The Gäubahn is popularly known as the "panoramic railway" due to its route on the western side of Stuttgart's valley with its unique view of the city. In order to preserve this popular route as part of the Stuttgart 21 transport hub project, the state of Baden-Württemberg has concluded a cooperation agreement with the Verband Region Stuttgart, the state capital Stuttgart and Deutsche Bahn Netz AG. The aim is to continue the line in a new form as a non-federally owned railway (NE-Bahn) and to align it with the needs of local S-Bahn operations.

As the conventional signalling system previously used on the Panoramabahn will no longer be available once Stuttgart 21 is commissioned, the Panoramabahn is to be technically integrated into the higher-level network of the Stuttgart Digital Node. With this forward-looking solution, investments in proprietary signalling systems can be avoided. The core component of NEXTRAIL's study on signalling is the analysis of the technical, operational and time-related constraints, as well as the dedicated technical and economic evaluation of solution variants and their derivations. In particular, the gradual renewal of the signalling system and the necessary harmonisation of the technical equipment with the surrounding lines were considered.

Key areas of service

  • Analysing the conventional existing systems and the technical, operational and time constraints

  • Conception of the solution for signalling for the continued operation of the non-federally owned railway in the superordinate network in the Digital Node Stuttgart (DKS)

  • Signalling concept with the technical, operational and time-related boundary conditions of the DKS

  • Further development and evaluation of the solution variants from the concept and preparation of the implementation plan

  • Preparation for piloting train-centred safety logic on a NE railway

Special features

NEXTRAIL's team of experts carries out this analysis and evaluation in close coordination with the stakeholders involved in working groups and steering committees. In addition, NEXTRAIL supports the client in the coordination of the project and provides technical advice on all issues relating to the transformation of conventional signalling system into the highly digitalised world of the Stuttgart 21 flagship project.
