Planning and construction management services for ETCS L2 for the Koralm railway of ÖBB

ÖBB Infrastruktur AG

Klagenfurt-Graz, January 2020 to December 2025
Digital Interlocking/CBTC

Preparation of the ETCS L2 design planning and support for ÖBB during project realisation. Including acceptance measurement and test runs up to the commissioning.

The Koralm railway is an important Austrian line connecting Graz in Styria and Klagenfurt in Carinthia. The line will be equipped with the train control system ETCS L2 (European Train Control System Level 2. It will be equipped mainly with ETCS stop markers and ETCS location markers and without light signals for train movements. ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) is carrying out the planning and project support in a two-phase overall project for the feeder lines (until 2023) and the full expansion (until the end of 2025). NEXTRAIL is using its digital expertise to support several service steps, from data collection up to the commissioning.

At the beginning the necessary basic data were collected and structured followed by the essential partial service: the creation of the balise planning for ETCS L2. NEXTRAIL then supported the implementation of the ETCS supplier's implementation, including document review, up to the commissioning.

Following the installation of the balises by the ETCS supplier, NEXTRAIL carried out an acceptance measurement. The aim was to verify the ECTS-relevant distances and positions. Finally, acceptance test runs were carried out in preparation for commissioning once the project planning had been finalised. NEXTRAIL was responsible for test management, in particular planning, execution and documentation.
In addition, the necessary steps and documentation for commissioning were supported.

Key areas of service

  • Data collection, creation of the plan basis list of all data bases

  • Balise planning in the form of schematic overview plans and as XML file

  • Description of the construction project, system configuration

  • Support for project management, e.g. with authority procedures and ordering from the ETCS supplier

  • Acceptance measurement

  • Checking the implementation of the ETCS supplier

  • Test management, test runs and test reports

Special features

The project is characterised by a high degree of digitalisation. The planning data XML file was generated from the ETCS L2 planning created with CAD tools in an end-to-end digital process. NEXTRAIL also took over the exchange with the ETCS supplier.
