Supporting the update of the ETCS Level 2 specifications

DB Netz AG

Frankfurt am Main, March 2020 to March 2021

Special feature of the project

The EuE papers from the already created VV-NTZ process could be used for their own safety method. The findings from this process were used for the new Release 3.1 and 3.2.

Supporting the update of the ETCS Level 2 specifications

During the update of the ETCS Level 2 specifications for DB Netz AG, a risk assessment was carried out for many change requests (CRs) in accordance with CSM-RA. The safety relevance and significance of the individual CRs were assessed. For a significant CR, the full risk management process as per CSM-RA was applied and documented.

As the specifications were required for implementation projects, the project was under considerable political and time pressure. Another challenge was the many interfaces to other projects, such as the Corridor A implementation project and the generic specifications for ETCS Level 1. As NEXTRAIL has an excellent knowledge of both safety and ETCS and was also represented in the interfacing projects – through the Safety Manager in Corridor A or the participation in ETCS Level 1 – the project was carried out safely and quickly.

Special features

This project broke new ground in two ways. For one, CSM-RA was used for the first time for generic specification development in the field of ETCS. In addition, CSM-RA and the German administrative regulation on new type approvals were brought together in a single project for the first time.
